Tennessee Volunteers Win Thrilling Overtime Showdown At Pittsburgh

Vanderbilt fails to cover in twenty point loss against (#23) Wake Forest.

The (#24) ranked Tennessee Volunteers football squad went to Heinz Field Saturday afternoon and captured an overtime victory from the (#17) Pittsburgh Panthers in a thrilling overtime contest.

Midway through the first and second quarters, it looked as if the Panthers might run away with the game. Up 10-0, it took an interception by the Vols’ defense deep in their own territory to stave off another Panthers scoring drive.

And once again, down 17-7 in the 2nd Quarter, Tennessee needed a 32-yard TD connection from QB Hendon Hooker to junior wideout Bru McCoy to narrow Pittsburgh’s early lead.

From there, the Vols would survive a blocked punt, a muffed punt return that led to Pittsburgh tying the game at 27 late in the 4th Quarter, and a 1st & Goal OT opportunity for the Panthers at the Vols’ 10-yard line to outlast the 17th ranked team in the nation by a final score of 34-27.

Tennessee online sports bettors who took the Vols -6.5 points along with the “Under” were rewarded on Saturday, while those who chose the Vols -7.5 line suffered a very close loss.

With the win, Tennessee improves their 2022 NCAA Division I college football season record to 2-0, and will face the Akron Zips at home on September 17th. The victory may also catapult the Volunteers into the Top 20 in the Associated Press poll due to the large number of high profile upsets that took place on September 10th.

Wild Weekend Of Upsets For “Top 25” College Football Teams

The #1 ranked team in the country, the Alabama Crimson Tide, were nearly defeated in Austin by the Texas Longhorns – but managed to escape with a 20-19 victory thanks to the last-minute heroics of Heisman Trophy winner Bryce Young.

However, other big-name college football teams suffered unbelievable defeats on Saturday.

In South Bend, the (#8) Notre Dame Fighting Irish likely said goodbye to their national title hopes – as the Marshall Thundering Herd earned a 26-21 victory on the field while at the same time collecting a reported $1.25 million for the trip.

The (#6) ranked Texas A&M Aggies didn’t fare any better at Kyle Field in College Station. They were upset by the unranked Appalachian State Mountaineers – walking away with a reported $1.5 million and handing the Aggies a crushing defeat in the process.

Both Appalachian State and Marshall were close to +1000 moneyline underdogs on legal Tennessee sportsbook apps leading up to Saturday afternoon.

But the “Top 25” upset train didn’t stop there.

Unranked Washington State beat the (#19) Wisconsin Badgers (in Madison) 17-14. Texas Tech came up with a 33-30 overtime win at home against the (#25) Houston Cougars, and the (#20) Kentucky Wildcats left Gainesville with a 26-16 victory against the 12th ranked Florida Gators.

Late Saturday night, (#21) BYU upset the (#9) Baylor Bears in Provo. Brigham Young junior kicker Jake Oldroyd missed a 45-yard field goal near the end of regulation to put the game into overtime at 20 points apiece – then missed a 37-yarder from the center of the field in the first OT to keep the game going.

Yet the Cougars scored a touchdown in double overtime (failing to convert) that led to the eventual 26-20 victory.

Although the (#24) Volunteers were ranked lower than the (#17) Pittsburgh Panthers entering Saturday’s contest, Tennessee was actually favored to win by roughly a touchdown.

Vanderbilt Loses 45-25 To (#23) Wake Forest Demon Deacons

Vanderbilt’s run at an undefeated season ended on Saturday at the hands of (#23) Wake Forest, who easily defeated the Commodores 45-25.

Vandy will travel to Northern Illinois on September 17th with a 2-1 season record to take on the Huskies in DeKalb.

(#2) Georgia, (#3) Ohio State, (#4) Michigan, and (#5) Clemson all won handily on Saturday.
